Starling Post is a monthly postal subscription delivering a personal letter, a bit of original art, and something to spark inspiration. A small world in an envelope, made to slow things down that you might savor a moment of stillness.

Back in the day, we all wrote letters to one another. If you lived far away you might talk on the phone occasionally, but rarely for more than a couple minutes because long-distance calls were so extraordinarily expensive. Letter writing was how you shared your life with the people who mattered.

And if you expand on that idea, there’s a reason movies and books so often show a soldier heading off to war with a photo and a letter tucked in his pocket — a letter from someone he loved deeply, carried close as a way of connecting, remembering, and holding that person near.

Our world is increasingly digitalized — so much so that now we rarely take the time to write real notes or letters to one another. Things arrive in quick bursts: two or three words in a text, or perhaps an email with a little more detail, but nothing that involves finding a pen, choosing the right paper, writing by hand, sealing the envelope, affixing a stamp, and sending it off into the world. And none of it includes that wonderful sense of anticipation that is created.

A letter might take weeks to arrive and in that time, a person would live with the question: When will the reply get here? What will she say? What will he tell me? Anticipation has a quiet shimmering quality as if listening for approaching footsteps.

And anticipation is everything!

Beyond letter writing, life has become fast paced and we expect results immediately. There’s some value in things being that way — but we’ve also lost something. We loose patience quickly, fail to notice life quietly unfolding around us. We’ve lost the ability to sit with empty hands and simply be undistracted, alone with ourselves. Not to mention we’ve lost the ability to notice how the light changes, or the simple beauty of birds and the natural world around us, sometimes harsh and irritating, sometimes soothing and delightful.
